How to Create an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

An AUP is important to promote good practice and safe, responsible use of the internet and digital tools, and promote good ethical practices such as respect for others and their property. The main goals are to:
  • Educate constituents about the value of the internet and digital tools
  • Promote school strategy of safe use of internet and digital tools and addresses the risks associate with their use.
  • Protect the school from liability
The constitution of Barbados currently has one act that speaks to digital safety, that is The Computer Misuse Act.

Every organisation, in my opinion, need to have an acceptable use policy because it not only safeguards it against legal action but also informs staff members of the expected standards of conduct.

Having an acceptable use of policy is necessary to inform all stakeholders of the do's and don'ts. Rules and guidelines are important in any organization and it is the same with usage of technology. It is very important to know the logistics since we will be held responsible and accountable for our actions.
