Sustainability is Key!

Today's educational leaders are faced with complex challenges which requires a multidisciplinary approach to solve. Therefore, promoting sustainability education at your institutions is a perfect way to support a solution oriented approach whilst developing 21st century skills.

According to UNESCO Sustainability Education is often referred to as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) which has been defined as:
"Education for Sustainable Development allows for every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future."

It means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning such as climate change, disaster risk education, biodiversity, poverty reduction and sustainable consumption.

Additionally, it requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behaviour and take action for sustainable development (University of Plymouth, n.d.).

How can a digital strategy facilitate education for sustainable development?

Let's look at the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)!

The utilisation of a digital strategy can facilitate the following the following pedagogical approaches:
  • Critical reflection- journals, reflective practice, brainstorming
  • System thinking and analysis- utilising real world scenarios, project- based learning
  • Participatory learning- with emphasis on group or peer learning, developing dialogue, experiential learning, action research, developing case studies with stakeholders (University of Plymouth, n.d.)
  • Thinking creatively for future scenarios- utilising roleplay, real-world inquiry, futures visioning, problem based learning
  • Collaborative learning- think-pair-share, flipped classroom, team-based learning
